New open gym session to be held early-release Wednesdays

There is a new gymnastics open gym time for early-release day from Lawrence public schools.

Open gym for children ages 6-12 will be held on Wednesdays from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. at Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane.

During open gym, children can work on the bars, balance beams, tumble track and ropes. Play is supervised, but unstructured, and parents need to sign their kids in at the door. The session is drop-in, and the cost is $5 per child (exact payment required).

The new time is in addition to existing sessions for 6- through 12-year-olds from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays and from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays.

There is also a preschool open gym for children under five. There are two sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays: 9 to 10 a.m. and 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. On Saturdays, there are also two sessions: 11 to 11:45 a.m. and noon to 12:45 p.m.

South Middle School is holding its spirit week this week. Tuesday’s
theme is Hawaiian Luau.

Schwegler Elementary School’s book drive continues all week. The
school will be collecting donations
of gently used or new books from Feb.
8 through Feb. 15.

– The Deerfield Elementary PTO
meets Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.
in the school’s music room.

– Both the Langston Hughes
Elementary school site council and
PTO meet on Tuesday at the school.
