New York Elementary to add butterfly garden

Volunteers work on New York Elementary's new butterfly garden on Saturday, April 16, 2016.

Students at New York Elementary School are hoping for some airborne visitors this spring after first steps have been taken to create a butterfly garden for the school, 936 New York St.

Over the weekend, school families and staff worked alongside volunteers with Kansas University’s Big Event program to construct the beds for the butterfly garden, said principal Nancy DeGarmo.

If you’re not familiar with how they are made, the gardens attract butterflies by having flowers and other plants that certain species of butterfly prefer for their nectar or because they make good host plants for cocoons.

The school had a butterfly garden previously, but schools throughout the district have been rebuilding their gardens following the completion of construction projects. New York’s new butterfly garden is on the north side of the school and is in addition to its vegetable garden, located on the south side. If your student is interested in gardening, the school’s garden club meets after school on Tuesdays.

DeGarmo said that on Saturday volunteers made four raised beds, filled them with soil and prepared the beds for the upcoming planting.
