Enrollment open for summer youth volunteer program

A local volunteer program is offering youths a way to stay busy this summer by helping the community.

Summer of Service lets participants volunteer with several local organizations over an eight-week period. The program is run by the Sunrise Project and open to youths ages 12 to 18. A donation of $25 per week is requested, but not required, in order to participate.

As part of the program, participants sign up for a specific volunteer project. Each project is a week long, and volunteers will help out Monday through Friday for three hours per day. There is one project each week in June and July, and participants can sign up to help with multiple projects if they would like.

The following organizations will host projects: Habitat for Humanity, school gardens, Ballard Community Services, Community Shelter, Just Food, Hidden Valley Camp, Family Promise, Humane Society and the Sunrise Project. A full schedule and description of the volunteer work involved with each project is available here.

New this year, youths can also sign up for Advocacy Week to be held July 18-22. Participants will work with various organizations to learn how to create positive social change.
