Big Brothers Big Sisters honors donors, volunteers

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County is recognizing several local businesses and individual volunteers for their contributions to its mentorship program.

BBBS provides one-to-one mentoring to more than 250 children throughout Lawrence.

“We are grateful to the corporations, foundations and individuals whose generosity allows us to provide youth facing adversity with a brighter future with increased opportunities and, ultimately, better communities for all,” said Stacie Schroeder, the area director, in a news release.

Three area businesses will receive the Corporate Community Support Award, which recognizes a donor whose investment has made a significant impact on the advancement of the BBBS program. Four businesses will also receive the Community Partner Awards, which recognizes a donor who demonstrates consistent generosity and dedication to helping BBBS.

Keely Waller, of KG Consulting Group, will receive the Community Impact Award for her service in various roles: a member of the BBBS board, chairwoman for the Tee & Taste BBBS Fundraiser, a volunteer “big sister,” and assistance with website and invitation design for BBBS events.

BBBS program awards will be given to five volunteers who serve as mentors. All are being recognized for dedication to their “little” and using the mentorship to help him or her overcome personal challenges.

All honorees will be presented with their awards at the BBBS Volunteer & Donor Appreciation Dinner on Oct. 15. For those interested in becoming a mentor, more information is available on the BBBS website or by calling 843-7359.
