Have a creative kid? Here are some activity suggestions for early-dismissal Wednesdays

If you’re looking for something to keep your kids busy after Wednesday early dismissal from Lawrence schools, a few organizations around town are offering some artistic options.

• First United Methodist Church is providing free art sessions for middle school students. The program, Art Café, includes art, cooking and woodworking activities. The middle school class is from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St. There is also a high school class on Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Classes begin next week and continue through May 18. Registration can be done online. For more information, contact Tami Clark at tami@fumclawrence.org or 841-7500. The goal of the program, which is open to the public, is to offer youth a safe place to create, Clark said.

• Muddy Waters Studio has youth clay classes, open to ages 6 and up. Students will be introduced to the basics of clay: hand building, wheel and slab. Classes on Wednesday are from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the studio, 925 Iowa St., Suite J. There are two seven-week sessions in the fall: Aug. 24 to Oct. 12 and Oct. 19 to Dec. 13. The cost is $126 per session. The classes are open to all abilities, offering both guided projects and the chance for students to choose their own, said Tierney Cacioppo, Muddy Waters owner and class instructor. For more information and other class options, visit muddywatersstudio.com.

• The Lawrence Arts Center has several classes Wednesday afternoon. For middle school students, there are three options: 2-D Tourist, 3-D Tourist and Stage & Screen. The classes 2-D Tourist and 3-D Tourist let students work in different mediums each week, and go from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Stage & Screen is 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday and gives students a chance to collaborate in both theater and film projects. Each class is 12 weeks, from Sept. 9 to Dec. 2, and costs about $175. Financial aid is available for those who meet certain guidelines. You can check out more classes in LAC’s online fall catalog.

Lawrence Public Schools are dismissed at either 1:35 p.m. or 2:20 p.m. on Wednesdays. A schedule listing each school’s dismissal time is available in the back-to-school newsletter.
