Morality, role models and Lindsay Lohan
Is there a trickle-down effect when celebrities get arrested for various improprieties? Vicki Courtney thinks there is.Courtney, who founded Virtuous Reality Ministries based in Austin, Texas, says she wasn’t surprised that actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested – again – early today on suspicion of drunken driving and possession of cocaine.Lohan (below), who recently was released from an alcohol rehabilitation facility, turned herself in last week to police to face a DUI charge in connection with a Memorial Day weekend hit-and-run crash.!“She surrounds herself with enablers who continue to perpetuate her wild lifestyle,” Courtney says in a press release. “I worry not just about Lohan, but also about the millions of young girls who look up to her. I fear that these girls will see Lohan, the same cute, freckly kid from ‘The Parent Trap,’ getting arrested and using drugs and think it’s cool for them to do the same thing.”Courtney, whose ministry says it helps girls and their parents “navigate today’s promiscuous culture,” also notes that Britney Spears and Paris Hilton were voted Worst Celebrity Role Models of 2006 in a joint poll by the Associated Press and AOL. Another author, Wendy Shalit, has been talking about the role model issue with the release of her book, “Girls Gone Mild.”She’s among those who are predicting a backlash to the wild-girl attitude in Hollywood. “The role models we have out there right now – Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan – it’s just a very narrow notion of empowerment,” Shalit recently told ABC News. “If that works for you, great. But for a lot of women, this is inauthentic.”_ – Faith Files, which examines issues of faith, spirituality, morals and ethics, is updated by features/faith reporter Terry Rombeck.
