Congratulations on being voted the “Best of Lawrence”! How does it feel to receive this recognition from the community?
Being a part of The Best of Lawrence is special. It is humbling and it means a lot to our team as it is a reflection of our continued efforts within the community.
What do you believe sets your business apart?
We are a “homegrown” local business that takes the time to care about our customers and provide them quality local products at the best possible pricing.
Can you provide a brief overview of your business’s history, including its founding, initial goals and how it has evolved over the years?
Checkers began as a small Rusty’s IGA grocery store which was purchased by Jim Lewis in 1982. The original store was then rebuilt as Checkers in 1987 in order to provide more competitive pricing and a larger variety of products.
We still strive to carry unique items along with high quality meat & produce at a substantial savings.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are looking to create their own successful ventures?
In order to be successful, one must find something they love to do and then do it to the best of one’s ability. It is not easy and determination is a must.
The “Best of Lawrence” title often indicates a commitment to excellence in customer service. How do you ensure that every customer has a positive experience with your business?
Customer Service is something we work on everyday and strive to continually improve upon.
We view our customers as our neighbors and friends which helps create a great atmosphere within the store.
What does being an integral part of the Lawrence community mean to you, and how do you plan to continue contributing positively?
Our community is wonderful and we have many great partnerships within it. There are several organizations that we partner with to assist with serving our community and providing help in different aspects to many.
What do you believe has been the biggest contributor to your business’s growth and reputation in the Lawrence area?
Consistency is key. We are constantly working to procure high quality products at the best possible pricing to pass the savings on to our customers.
