Posting back-to-back triple-doubles is nothing new for Kevin McCullar Jr.

The former Kansas guard did it during his final season in Lawrence, with 12 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds against Kentucky in the Champions Classic on Nov. 14, 2023, and 22 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds against Chaminade at the Maui Invitational six days later — doubling the all-time number of triple-doubles recorded by KU men’s basketball players.

McCullar didn’t quite retain that form for much of the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign, in part because he was dealing with a bone bruise to his knee. The aftermath of that knee injury continued to hamper McCullar for nearly a year afterward, even as the New York Knicks selected him with one of the final picks in the second round of the NBA Draft, and he didn’t make his professional debut until Jan. 30, with the Westchester Knicks of the NBA G League.

He may now be starting to show his true potential.

In consecutive road games against the College Park Skyhawks on Wednesday and Friday, McCullar — who had only played 10 prior games on the season, and came into College Park shooting 5-for-28 in his three previous appearances — recorded his first two professional triple-doubles.

In the first matchup, a 138-123 victory, he tallied 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting to go with 10 assists and 10 rebounds; in the second, which required overtime for the Knicks to win 130-125, he did one better with 23, 10 and 10 in 42 minutes of action.

McCullar’s second triple-double might not even have been the most impressive statistical milestone in that game, though. The Knicks’ center Moses Brown, out of UCLA, scored 27 points and grabbed 28 rebounds.

Regardless, the performances demonstrate that McCullar is starting to build some steam after a stop-and-start first two months as a pro. After making the first two appearances of his career, beginning with that game against the Osceola Magic on Jan. 30, McCullar missed the next five games and turned in some lackluster performances early on — in 11 games played, he’s still averaging 11.3 points per game on just 39.3% shooting and 20.6% from beyond the arc to go with 5.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists.

The San Antonio native showed flashes early in March, beginning with a 21-point game at Austin on March 4, but didn’t put it all together until the College Park doubleheader.

McCullar and Westchester will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against the Maine Celtics.
