Preps notebook: LHS teams fall in regionals, Eudora softball wins regional title

The postseason came to an abrupt end for Lawrence High’s baseball and softball teams against a pair of higher-seeded schools on the fields of the Blue Valley District Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

LHS softball fell 10-0 to Gardner Edgerton in six innings. The Blazers’ pitcher Ava Yokley held the Chesty Lions scoreless, while Anna Fitzgibbons went 4-for-4 at the plate and Charlee Latteman went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Madison Becker hit the single to enact the run rule in the sixth.

For LHS, which dropped to 9-17 to conclude the year, Keira Norris took the loss with seven runs allowed in three innings, while four players had one hit apiece.

The Chesty Lions’ baseball team fared a bit better in a close game throughout but still lost 5-2 to a familiar foe, Mill Valley, to end its year at 13-14. The Jaguars’ pitcher, Beau Peterson, held LHS to six hits and one walk with the two earned runs.

Kyan Guss went 2-for-3 and earned a couple outs on the mound for the Lions, while Connor Nowak and Johnathan Riggins each drove in a run.

Eudora softball claims regional championship

After waiting a day to host its 4A regional due to weather, the Eudora softball team looked just as sharp, steamrolling a pair of opponents Tuesday night to earn its spot in the state tournament.

The Cardinals beat Paola 15-0 and Tonganoxie 11-2, leaving no doubt. Olivia O’Toole got the win in the first game and Samantha Claire in the second.

Eudora won a state title in 2022 but settled for third place last season.

The 4A state tournament begins May 23 at Salina South.

Free State soccer pulls off road upset

The Free State soccer team showed last season it was capable of a surprise when it went ahead of and eventually dragged top-seeded Garden City into multiple overtimes into the regional playoffs, only to lose in the end.

This time, back in western Kansas, the Firebirds finished off their upset.

Taylor Woods’ second-half goal went down as the lone score as the 14th-seeded Firebirds took down No. 3 Dodge City Tuesday night for just their fourth win of the year.

They also earned what could be a bit of good fortune, as No. 11 Derby also upset No. 6 Topeka in the other half of their bracket, meaning Free State will take on the Panthers on the road again on Thursday.

The winner will get a regional title and a spot in Tuesday’s state quarterfinals.
