Preps Notebook: City, area runners deliver strong finishes at Rim Rock Classic

The Free State cross country team competed against 25 schools at the annual Rim Rock meet in Lawrence on Saturday. The boys’ team landed in eighth place, led by Top 20 finishes from juniors Jake Loos (13th) and Blake Wohler (17th). The Free State girls’ team finished 12th overall, featuring a Top 15 finish by sophomore Brylee Burns (15th).

In area results, Eudora’s Sydney Owens took 11th place in the girls varsity crimson race while Hanna Keltner and Phoebe Fletcher finished 18th and 22nd respectively. Tonganoxie’s Jocie Thomas (9th) and Baldwin’s Irelyn Kennedy (22nd) also finished among the top runners in the girls varsity blue race.

Zachary Arnold’s 10th-place time was the best finish for the Eudora High boys, and senior Caleb Carr led the Baldwin High boys team with a 17th-place finish. And

The Bishop Seabury junior varsity cross country team also competed at Rim Rock, with Josie Kim (63rd) and Campbell Helling (67th) slipping into the Top 100 of the girls’ race. Hayden Slough, the lone Seahawk in the boys’ race, finished at 256th.

The Firebirds will compete next at the Haskell Invite on Oct. 8. The Seahawks will return to action on Oct. 6 at Eudora.

Boys soccer roundup

The Lawrence High boys soccer team dropped Tuesday’s road test at Olathe West, 3-1, for its fourth consecutive loss this season. Down two goals in the first period, the Lions (4-4-1) got a shot in the arm on a score from senior Cale Scott, but it wasn’t enough to pull LHS through.

The Free State boys soccer team held on for a 1-1 overtime draw with Olathe East on Tuesday night. Junior Michael Lickert scored the lone goal for the Firebirds (4-2-2).

LHS aims to rebound against Olathe North at home on Thursday at 7 p.m. Free State squares off with Shawnee Mission East on Thursday at home at 7 p.m.

LHS, Free State girls golf teams swing for the green at Lions invite

The Lawrence High and Free State girls’ golf teams competed at the annual LHS invite on Wednesday at Eagle Bend Golf Course.

The Firebirds’ fifth-place finish was fueled by Claire Berquist (81), Natalie Schmidtberger (90), Emma Stammeyer (96) Merritt Hale (102), and Liza Engelbrecht (123). LHS fell in at 12th on the board, with strong efforts from Peyton Fowler (111), Providence Fowler (114), Sadie Heinbach (115), Emme Dye (116), Shea Rowley (113), and Lily Fisher (120).

LHS will compete at the SM Northwest Invite next on Oct. 4 at Tomahawk Hills Golf Course. Free State heads to the SM South Invite on Oct. 6 at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course.

Eudora girls golf finishes third at Ottawa invite

The Eudora girls golf team placed third at the Ottawa invite last Wednesday. Joellen Vogt placed third individually, with Bree Gabel (11th) and Olivia Lawhorn (T12) breaking into the top 20 individual spots for the Cardinals.

Eudora heads Paola for its second tournament of the season on Wednesday.

Free State girls tennis grabs gold at Emporia

The Free State girls’ tennis team finished first at Emporia over the weekend, making deep runs on the singles and doubles courts. Kinley VanPelt cleaned the singles court, running away with the championship match. Maya Lee captured third place for the Firebirds on the singles court, defeating Mill Valley in the consolation round.

On the doubles court, FSHS seniors Jada Fowler and Wendo Kimori won the third-place match against another Free State doubles team, Zoe Cachiguango-Latta and Cami Lee.

The Firebirds turn their attention to LHS next, hosting the Lions on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
