Free State golfer Jack Randall goes out with a round in the 70s in tough conditions at state
3 Bishop Seabury golfers medal despite Round 2 being called off
Free State's Jack Randall hits an approach shot during the Justin Siler Memorial Tournament at the Lawrence Country Club on Monday, May 2, 2022.
On a wet and rainy Tuesday that saw five of the six high school classifications in Kansas cancel the second round of their state golf tournaments because of unplayable conditions, Free State High’s Jack Randall played on.
Randall, the lone Firebird to advance to Day 2 in Dodge City, followed up Monday’s 5-over par 76 with a 79 on Tuesday in Dodge City to finish at 13-over for the tournament and in a tie for 27th place.
Playing as the Firebirds’ most consistent scorer throughout the season, Randall finished his year with another round in the 70s. He shot 39 on the front nine and 40 on the back nine at Mariah Hills Golf Course.
He carded one birdie on each side — a four at the par-5 seventh hole and a three on the par-4 15th hole — and shot even par for an eight-hole stretch after starting the day with a bogey at No. 1 and a double bogey at No. 2.
“Jack had a solid season,” FSHS coach Chuck Law said. “I know it didn’t live up to his expectations, but that’s just because he has such high expectations. I also know this will drive him to work hard and come back even better.”
The fact that Randall was a part of a Free State team that achieved all of its preseason goals had the Firebirds smiling as the season came to an end. They wanted to finish in the top six in the Sunflower League and did it. They wanted to finish in the top three at regionals to qualify for state as a team and did that, as well.
“And then at state, you have a young, inexperienced team and you just hope you can turn in a solid showing and represent your school and your program well and we achieved that, too,” Law said.
Law also praised Dodge City, as a community, for putting on a great tournament and showing up to help support the golfers and programs from start to finish, bad weather and all.
“Kudos to the folks in Dodge City,” Law said. “They were fabulous hosts.”
Blue Valley West’s Carson Baker, who shot even par for the tournament, firing a 71 on Monday and another 71 on Tuesday, won the Class 6A state tournament. In the team scoring, Blue Valley High won the 6A state title with a team score of 302.
At the Class 2A level in Emporia, Bishop Seabury’s showing in Round 2 was canceled three holes into Tuesday’s round because of the rain, leaving the Seahawks with a fourth-place team finish. Seniors Will Hedges and Jaxon Patterson each shot 82 on Monday to finish tied for ninth. Seahawks senior Jonah Kim shot a 13-over 84, senior Minkyu Jung finished with a 96, junior Truman Hill carded a 103 and junior Enzo Karam had a 107.
Patterson, Hedges and Kim all picked up medals for finishing in the top 20.
It was disappointing to not get to finish day two,” Seabury golf coach Bryan Hedges said Tuesday night. “But we are proud to be the first team in Seabury history to win regionals and (to achieve) first time a Seabury team finished in the top six teams at state.”
According to his coach, the younger Hedges finished the season with the lowest scoring average in all of Class 2A.
In area golf action, Tonganoxie High’s quest for a Class 4A championship also was called off. The Chieftains finished in fifth place at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, with senior Andrew Willson shooting an 80 on Monday to finish tied for seventh. THS sophomore Colton Brusven carded an 83, junior Carter Gratton shot a 92, junior Gabriel Seba had a 93, freshman Zachary Fisher shot a 94 and junior Remi Baldock had a 106.
Eudora High freshman Tyler Deterding shot an 84 on Monday and Baldwin High junior Caden Englert carded an 86. Both qualified to play Tuesday’s round.
KSHSAA rules dictate that if the second round is not able to be played, the Day 1, 18-hole results will stand.
