Preps Notebook: Bishop Seabury swimmer hauls in two titles at state tournament
Bishop Seabury senior Ian Blake defended his title in the 100-yard butterfly and won the 100-yard breaststroke at the Class 5-1A boys swimming state championships Saturday at Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka.
Blake finished first in the butterfly in 51.85 seconds and in the breaststroke in 57.84 seconds and was one of just two swimmers, alongside Regan Richardson of Maize South High in Wichita, to win two individual events.
“It feels great, and I’m glad that there will always be a banner in our gym to remember that,” said Blake, who won the state title in the butterfly in 52.28 seconds a year ago.
Blake entered the meet seeded fourth in the butterfly at 54.07 seconds but knocked more than two seconds off that time in the preliminaries and finished in 51.95 seconds to enter the finals as the top seed. As the best breaststroke swimmer in the state all season, he entered the meet with a seed time of 59.43 seconds and then swam a 58.15 in the preliminaries.
He won the titles despite experiencing some soreness in his right shoulder.
“I was worried throughout the week, but it didn’t hurt much once I got to state so I wasn’t worried,” Blake said.
Meanwhile, Free State junior Elliott Ahlvers finished second in the 1-meter diving at the Class 6A boys swimming state championships, which were also held Saturday at Capitol Federal Natatorium.
Ahlvers, who scored 450.2 points in the final, was second to Blue Valley North senior Spencer Eyen’s score of 452.6. Teammate Dawson Bonnell, a sophomore, was fifth in the 100 butterfly at 53.28 seconds.
Lawrence High junior Giuliano Lule-Paredes was seventh in the 100 backstroke in 55.02 seconds, and the team of Maximilian Whittaker, Ryan Lane, Jack Tell and Christopher Oral was eighth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.19.
