Prep Notebook: LHS swimmers honor seniors with big night
Lawrence High senior Carmen Braden claimed four first-place finishes and classmate Ali Jones had three in their last home meet as the Lions’ girls swimming team defeated Washburn Rural, Leavenworth and Topeka West in the Lawrence High Quadrangular on Tuesday.
Braden finished first in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.46 seconds and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:32.53. She joined Ali Jones, junior Abi Jones and junior Paige Unekis to win the 200 medley relay in 2:06.67, and the quartet also won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:17.20.
Ali Jones won the 200 individual medley in 2:20.74 and finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.62.
Abi Jones placed second in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.11 and fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:20.00.
Sophomores Emily Brandt and Annie Shew finished first and second, respectively, in the 1-meter diving, with Brandt scoring 236.35 points and Shew scoring 208.4 points.
Unekis also finished second in the 500 freestyle in 6:32.75.
Lawrence finished with 409 points, with Washburn Rural second with 399, Leavenworth third with 218 and Topeka West fourth with 98.
Free State baseball routs SM South
Mason Lester went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, Grant Gregory went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Maddox Burkitt allowed three hits over five innings as the Free State baseball team defeated Shawnee Mission South 11-0 at home on Tuesday.
Brady Kern also went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Firebirds (10-3), who will play Shawnee Mission East at home at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Lawrence baseball team lost 1-0 in eight innings at Shawnee Mission Northwest on Tuesday despite a complete game from pitcher Grant Cleavinger. The Lions (8-5) will face Olathe South at home at noon on Saturday.
The Tonganoxie High baseball team defeated Hoyt-Royal Valley 16-7 on Monday and Bonner Springs 10-1 on Tuesday, with both games on the road. … Eudora High defeated Baldwin/Bishop Seabury 7-4 at home on Tuesday. … Perry-Lecompton split a road doubleheader against Sabetha High on Monday, winning 10-3 before losing 16-6.
LHS, FSHS compete in boys golf invitationals
Free State sophomore Jack Randall shot a 5-over-par 77 to tie for seventh at the Topeka Seaman Golf Invitational held Wednesday at Village Greens Golf Course in Meriden.
The Firebirds finished fifth in the 10-team event with a combined 329. Lawrence High finished 10th with a 397.
Senior Dawson Pfannenstiel shot an 82 to tie for 17th, freshman Aiden Graf-Hannah carded an 84, freshman Adam Hemker had an 86, senior Isaac Gonzales shot an 88 and junior Jackson Lintecum had a 96.
Senior Trevor Johnson and junior Jack Elsten led the Lions with a 97 while senior Aidan Zimney finished with a 101 and senior Jacob Bartholomew had a 102.
The Free State boys golf team took 10th place and Lawrence High finished in 13th in the Sunflower League Invitational at Sunflower Hills Golf Course in Bonner Springs on Monday.
Randall led FSHS with a 10-over 82 and LHS sophomore Gunnar Wayenberg led his team with an 86.
Firebirds softball earns another win
The Free State softball team won 8-2 at Shawnee Mission West on Tuesday to improve to 7-4. It will play host to Shawnee Mill Valley at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday before facing Lawrence High for the first time this season at LHS at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The Lions, meanwhile, lost 10-0 at Olathe West on Tuesday to fall to 1-9. They will face Olathe South at home at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday before facing their rivals.
Perry-Lecompton’s softball team faced Sabetha High in a doubleheader on Monday in which it won the first game 12-2 in five innings before losing the second game 5-4 in seven innings. In each game, Taylor Damme went 3-for-4 and Trystan Buttram hit a double. … Eudora High defeated Baldwin High 11-1 in six innings on Tuesday.
FSHS girls soccer falls in OT
The Free State girls soccer team (0-7-1) lost 1-0 in overtime at Gardner Edgerton on Tuesday and will play host to Olathe West at home at 7 p.m. on Thursday. … The Lawrence High girls soccer team (0-9) lost 8-0 at Shawnee Mission West on Tuesday and will face Shawnee Mission East at the Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. on Thursday. … Baldwin High won 3-0 at Heritage Christian on Tuesday. … Eudora High defeated Bishop Seabury 1-0 at home on Monday.
