Kansas guard Wyvette Mayberry has entered the transfer portal, On3 reported on Friday morning.
Mayberry becomes KU’s fifth known entry into the portal since it opened on Tuesday, following Zoe Canfield, Carla Osma, McKenzie Smith and Freddie Wallace, and by far its most experienced player intending to transfer
A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mayberry spent three seasons with the Jayhawks following two at the University of Tulsa; she will look to play a sixth year of college basketball, presumably by obtaining a medical redshirt, after she was only able to participate in six games last season due to a knee injury.
In limited action across those games, she averaged 5.2 points on just 26.8% shooting.
Mayberry had been a significant contributor to the Jayhawks’ postseason runs in 2023 (to the WNIT championship) and 2024 (to the second round of the NCAA Tournament), starting 63 of the 66 games in which she played. Her best season was her first at Kansas, when she averaged 11.4 points, 3.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds during the 2022-23 campaign.
The idea entering Mayberry’s fifth season, for which she was eligible because she had played in the pandemic-affected 2020-21 campaign, was for her to play off the ball more after KU had experienced success with young star S’Mya Nichols running the offense. But Mayberry missed the first three games of the season and ultimately did not play again after Dec. 5, when she went 0-for-10 in a victory over Wichita State.
She became one of numerous Jayhawks lost to injury over the course of a season that saw KU miss the postseason. Wallace and Jordan Webster never suited up for KU after arriving as transfers, and neither is expected to return next season, with Wallace in the portal and Webster having gone through senior day. Injuries to top scorers Elle Evans and Nichols late in the season also hampered the Jayhawks’ chances of making a run in the Big 12 tournament.
