After winning opener, KU women will face Corpus Christi today

After a nine-month hiatus, the Kansas women’s basketball team is getting back in the swing of things. KU will play its second game in five days, when it hosts Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. Sunday in Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks, who didn’t get to play any exhibition contests, never trailed in their 78-62 win over Northern Colorado in the season opener on Wednesday.

A trio of KU players finished in double figures in the win, including a 21-point performance from sophomore Holly Kersgieter. Freshman Ioanna Chatzileonti finished with 15 points in her collegiate debut, while senior Tina Stephens tallied 13 points in the win.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi, meanwhile, is coming off a 78-58 loss to Wichita State. This matchup will be KU’s second of a four-game slate before the team’s first Big 12 contest of the season.

“We talked about how grateful we all are for the opportunity to compete,” KU head coach Brandon Schneider said after the first game. “I think any time we get a chance to move forward and play in a game, I think we really need to appreciate it and have some fun with it.”

What: Kansas vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi

When: 2 p.m. today

Where: Allen Fieldhouse

Quick Note: KU has won 16 nonconference games in a row entering this matchup, with its last loss against a non-Big 12 foe coming against Nebraska on Dec. 5, 2018. The Jayhawks went undefeated during an 11-game non conference slate a season ago, posting their first flawless record in nonconference play in 14 years.

Streaking: Kersgieter led KU to a season-opening victory by pacing the team in three statistical categories. Kersgieter scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds en route to a double-double. She also paced the squad with four assists. When Northern Colorado cut KU’s lead to 11 points with 4:32 left to play, Kersgieter put the game away by drilling back-to-back 3-pointers.

Slumping: The Jayhawks had four players average double figures last year, and it is probably not fair to expect that again. That said, three of KU’s five starters finished in double-digits in Game 1. Junior Aniya Thomas and sophomore Zakiyah Franklin were the only two starters not to do so, as they each ended up with 6 points in the win.
