KU swept by Creighton to conclude nonconference play

A second matchup against No. 18 Creighton this season — and a second match of the day — didn’t go too well for the Kansas volleyball team on Sunday.

The 17th-ranked Jayhawks ended the Omaha Tournament on a sour note with a 3-0 loss to the Bluejays (24-26, 18-25, 22-25) at D.J. Sokol Arena.

KU completed its nonconference slate at 9-5 after having previously beaten Omaha on Saturday and South Florida earlier on Sunday. Two of its five losses have come against Creighton, after the Bluejays also took down the Jayhawks in five sets at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin, on Aug. 31.

Ava Martin recorded 18 kills for KU, which was double the total of the Jayhawks’ leader, Jovana Zelenović. Creighton outhit them .218 to .107. KU’s libero, Ryan White, finished with 15 digs.

KU came closest to picking up a set at the start of the match but found itself playing from behind after a stretch of five straight points that put Creighton ahead 19-16. The Jayhawks tied the score on several occasions and even avoided a set point at 24-23 when Jaya Johnson committed an attack error. But the Bluejays got the two straight points they needed on a kill by Kiara Reinhardt and error by Rhian Swanson.

The second set got away from the Jayhawks late thanks to a 6-1 run capped off by Nora Wurtz’s service ace.

KU actually erased a five-point deficit in the third and took a 21-20 lead on a kill by Grace Nelson, but Creighton scored five of the final six points, including two kills by Martin and two aces.

The sweep put a damper on a day that had featured a four-set victory over South Florida, one that included double-doubles from setter Cristin Cline (48 assists, 15 digs) and Nelson (17 kills, 15 digs), plus 17 kills by Reese Ptacek and 13 more from Zelenović. Aurora Papac had a career-high 10 block assists against the Bulls.

Selena Leban shone with 10 kills on .350 hitting in the sweep at Omaha on Saturday.

The Jayhawks will get the chance to play at home for the first time this season on Friday when they host Arizona State to open Big 12 Conference play at 7 p.m. at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.
