KU volleyball earns fourth straight sweep in win over Wichita State
The Kansas volleyball team extended its streak to four consecutive sweeps when it beat Wichita State 3-0 (28-26, 25-14, 25-16) at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita on Tuesday night.
Freshman opposite hitter Jovana Zelenović led the Jayhawks with 11 kills and added six block assists as KU (7-4) staved off a pair of set points to win the first game in extra points on their way to a dominant victory overall.
“I really think the more disciplined we can be, the more success we’re going to have,” KU coach Matt Ulmer said in a press release. “It’s taken us a little while to get our defensive system clicking, but you can see it coming together, and that’s exciting. The last couple of matches showed that we can perform well even in tough environments, and the more we stick to our principles, the more consistent we’ll be moving forward.”
Reese Ptacek tallied nine kills in the three-set match, and Rhian Swanson added eight. Setter Cristin Cline recorded 38 assists and eight digs, and libero Ryan White, the reigning Big 12 defensive player of the week after her strong showing in South Dakota, had 14 digs.
Wichita State got eight kills and 14 digs from outside hitter Sydney Dunning, but she also committed eight attack errors as the Shockers hit just .016 as a team.
Their best set was the first. KU held a three-point lead late in the game that WSU eliminated after an attack error by Grace Nelson, block by Elinor Engel and Emerson Wilford on Ptacek and kill by Allie Paulsen to tie the score at 21.
After Swanson put KU ahead 23-22, the Shockers came within a point of victory thanks to a kill by Jordan Heatherly and an attack error by Swanson. However, Cline, Swanson and Aurora Papac combined for a crucial block on Dunning, and then the Jayhawks both staved off the second set point and went ahead when Papac and Zelenović blocked Dunning two additional times.
Logan Bell gave WSU a chance with a service error that made it 26-26, but a kill by Zelenović and yet another block gave KU the set.
The second set was essentially decided by a 7-0 run for the Jayhawks with White serving, capped off by an ace. KU quickly followed that with another stretch of five straight. Zelenović recorded the final two points of the game with kills off sets by Cline.
KU took a bit longer to distance itself from Wichita State in what turned out to be the final set. Jenna Cubbage tied the score at 12 for the Shockers with a kill, but the Jayhawks surged ahead with Papac and Swanson, while also capitalizing on a trio of attack errors and a bad set. KU scored the final three points in a row: kills by Ptacek and Selena Leban and a solo block by Ptacek on Engel.
The Jayhawks will play on the road at Omaha on Saturday to 3 p.m. to kick off their final road tournament of the season.
