The Kansas volleyball team set a record on Sunday afternoon by sweeping Texas Tech (25-17, 25-17, 25-16) at United Supermarkets Arena.

The Jayhawks, who improved to 9-3 (2-0 Big 12) on the season, have now won 24 straight sets, breaking the program record of 21 that dated back to 2016.

For the first time in her career, freshman Taylor Stanley did not lead her team in kills; that’s because junior middle blocker Reese Ptacek tallied a match-high 14 on just 19 swings with a .684 hitting percentage. Stanley added 12 with nine digs, while freshman Elia Dinsmore led Tech with 10 kills.

The Red Raiders, who have not started the season well and whose coach was recently fired (reportedly for cause), did not keep the match particularly close in their home arena after allowing a 5-0 run with Logan Bell serving that put KU ahead 16-10 in the first set. Bell recorded two aces during the set.

Ptacek caught fire early in the second game, and multi-sport athlete Cydnee Bryant recorded her first career kill at set point to make it 25-17. Bryant was one of many reserves to see time on Sunday as freshmen Tessa Dodd, Avery Poulton and Ryan Sadler all played, with Poulton appearing in every set and recording three kills, two digs, an assist and a block.

Ptacek at one point recorded three kills in the span of four points early in the third set. Aisha Aiono gave KU a boost later on as KU closed the match on a 7-1 run to prevent any potential threat from the Red Raiders.

KU will host Utah on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Utes are 10-3 and have also started 2-0 in league play after impressive ranked wins over Colorado and Baylor.
