The Kansas men’s golf team opened its season in style on Tuesday with individual and team first-place finishes at the New York Harbor Cup in Bayonne, New Jersey.

At the brand-new event hosted by Rutgers, the Jayhawks shot 25-under as a team across three rounds to slip past Purdue by two strokes for the victory, guided by an impressive 15-under first round from Monday’s competition.

Meanwhile, in the individual standings, sophomore Arthur Carlier shot a 5-under 66 in Tuesday’s final round, the best of any golfer on the day, to surge into first place, where he tied with Purdue’s Jenson Forrester as the individual medalist at 12-under.

“Great team win today, we hung in there and obviously Arthur had a great round of golf,” KU coach Jamie Bermel said in a press release. “Total team effort! We (led) the tournament from start to finish, which is hard to do.”

Freshman Nicolas Vidal Reig, a March signee from Las Palmas, Spain, spent some time in the lead himself and was 9-under through two rounds but shot even par in the third and ended up coming in third place.

Junior Ty Lasley (tied for 13th, 2-under), senior Will Baker (tied for 17th, even) and junior Hartej Grewal (tied for 34th, 6-over) rounded out KU’s top five, while freshman Brady Rapp, from Leawood, shot 14-over as an individual.

Behind KU and Purdue in the team standings were Little Rock and Michigan State, which tied for third at 11-under, followed by Rutgers (6-under), South Florida and Marquette (2-under), West Virginia (20-over) and Nebraska (37-over).

Carlier’s victory is his best collegiate finish, after he tied for sixth in three different events as a freshman. His per-round average in the spring was 71.0.

The Jayhawks won one event all of last season, the Hoosier Collegiate in Bloomington, Indiana, in April. They will be in action next at the Folds of Honor Collegiate in Grand Haven, Michigan, beginning on Monday.

“We have a short turnaround time before our next event, but need to get a few things tightened up before we head to Michigan for the Folds of Honor,” Bermel said.
