The 18th-ranked Kansas women’s soccer knocked off No. 7 Texas Tech, 3-2, Thursday night at Rock Chalk Park as the Jayhawks celebrated Senior Night in their regular-season finale.
KU honored eight seniors before the match, and for most of the 90 minutes, the Jayhawks appeared to be the better team, outshooting Texas Tech, 14-12, including 6-5 in shots on goal. Kansas also had 14 corner kicks to the Red Raiders’ five.
The match-winner came at 78:39, when Kate Langfelder blasted a shot in the bottom left corner of the net off assists from Caroline Castans and Marit McLaughlin to give the Jayhawks their first win over a top-10 ranked team since beating then No. 7-ranked TCU, 1-0, in the Big 12 tournament title game on Nov. 9, 2024.
Kansas (13-4-2, 7-2-2 Big 12) got on the board first at the 19:00 mark, when Jordan Rowan and Norah Jacomen connected on a pass before Jacomen found Castans. Castans then sent a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season to give the Jayhawks a 1-0 lead.
However, Texas Tech (12-2-4, 8-2-1) responded seven-plus minutes later, when at 26:36, Kaitlyn Giametta found Taylor Zdrojewski with a through ball and Zdrojewski slotted a shot under a diving Sophie Dawe into the net to tie the match at 1.
Kansas struck again before halftime, though, as at 37:13, Livvy Moore sent a cross into the penalty area, where Sydni Fink made a perfect header for her first goal of the season to put the Jayhawks ahead, 2-1, at halftime. The assist was Moore’s 12th of the season, which leads the Big 12 and is tied for second nationally.
Kansas outshot Texas Tech, 9-5, in the opening 45 minutes, including 3-2 in shots on goal. The Jayhawks had seven corner kicks to Texas Tech’s two and the Red Raiders were shown the only yellow card of the first half.
The Jayhawks had the better run of play for the first 25 minutes of the second half, but it was the Red Raiders who scored next. Texas Tech won a corner kick and after a pileup in the mouth of the Kansas goal, Alana Harry poked home a shot to even the match, 2-2.
Langfelder’s goal put KU in front, but the Jayhawks had to get a save from Dawe in a 1-on-1 with Zdrojewski in the final 10 minutes to preserve the victory. Dawe made three saves in goal to earn the victory for Kansas.
Kansas now turns its attention to the Big 12 soccer tournament, which will be played beginning on Monday at Texas Health Mansfield Stadium in Mansfield, Texas. The Jayhawks’ quarterfinal opponent and match time for Monday will be announced on Friday.
