Kansas women's golf coach Lindsay Kuhle

The Kansas women’s golf team finished first out of 16 schools at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic that concluded on Wednesday, securing the Jayhawks’ second team victory under head coach Lindsay Kuhle.

KU shot a 15-under 849 that was seven strokes ahead of the next two closest schools — Boise State and Pepperdine — at the event in Wolcott, Colorado.

“Today and this whole week we talked about playing with courage, patience, aggressiveness and sticking to our course management and our game plan,” Kuhle said in a press release. “We were really sure off the tee and with our approach with distance and direction. We also made a lot of putts.”

Senior Lily Hirst was the top Jayhawk on the day, tying for fourth place overall with her 7-under 209, marking her second top-five finish since arriving on campus. Four other KU competitors reached 18th place or higher.

“We have ten girls that can go low and contribute to this team, which really makes us all better,” Kuhle said in the release. “We will appreciate this win because of hard work. I’m proud of the girls and Coach (Stephen) Bidne. It was a total team effort.”

KU has now won team titles in back-to-back seasons, the first time it has accomplished that feat in more than a decade. Kuhle, who began her KU tenure in the summer of 2021, received a three-year contract extension in July.

The Red Sky Classic was just the Jayhawks’ second event of the season, which continues through May. Next up, KU will host the Marilynn Smith Invitational at Lawrence Country Club beginning Oct. 7.
