The Basketball Tournament announced on Monday morning that Zeke Mayo will join the Kansas alumni team JHX Hoops “once his summer league obligations are complete.”
Mayo, a Lawrence native who played for KU during the 2024-25 season, is currently set to join the Washington Wizards for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, and their schedule begins on Friday. The Wizards will play at least five games during the event, potentially concluding as early as July 18 or as late as July 20.
JHX Hoops’ first game, meanwhile, is on July 19 at 3 p.m. against OffDaHook at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. If the KU alumni are able to advance to the second round, they will continue by taking on either No. 3 seed Purple Reign or No. 6 The Shine on July 21 at 8 p.m.
If Mayo is able to actually join the team, he could be an extremely valuable addition as a young and recently productive player. In his lone campaign with the Jayhawks, he averaged 14.6 points while shooting 42.2% from beyond the arc. He was previously a Summit League player of the year during his tenure with South Dakota State, where he played his first three seasons of college basketball.
JHX Hoops’ roster currently includes former Jayhawks Cliff Alexander, David McCormack, Billy Preston, Nick Timberlake, Jamari Traylor, LaGerald Vick and Kevin Young, as well as the lone non-KU addition Jacob Hanna, who recently played for Washburn. The team is coached by Sherron Collins and managed by Tyshawn Taylor, among others.
The KU alumni will take on Purple Reign, the Kansas State alumni team, in a scrimmage called the Wheat State Summer Showdown at the Swinney Center at the University of Missouri-Kansas City on July 17 at 7 p.m. The two teams will also host a camp at UMKC each of the previous two days.
