Incoming Kansas guard Darryn Peterson’s final high school season came to an end on Friday.
Peterson and his team, sixth-seeded Prolific Prep of Napa, California, lost to Texas-based No. 10 seed Dynamic Prep by a score of 83-64 at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Indiana.
The defeat knocked Prolific Prep out in the semifinals of Chipotle Nationals, an annual competition that brings together some of the nation’s best high school basketball teams.
Peterson, a five-star combo guard from Canton, Ohio, who will join KU in the summer as the Jayhawks’ highest-rated recruit since Josh Jackson in 2016, led all scorers with 24 points but got them on just 9-for-27 shooting, including 4-for-14 on 3-pointers.
Rutgers commit Jaden Nwuli scored 20 points for Dynamic Prep, while SMU commit Jaden Toombs posted a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double, as Prolific trailed by 26 points at halftime and never meaningfully caught up.
The double-digit loss followed a much more dramatic game on Thursday in which Prolific Prep had traded blows with No. 3 seed Long Island Lutheran but emerged with an 81-80 victory in overtime. In that contest, Prolific had trailed 68-67 in the final seconds when Peterson — previously 0-for-6 on 3s all night — drained a go-ahead straight-on 3, only for LuHi to even the score on a pair of free throws just before the buzzer.
Even with the perimeter struggles, that game was a much more efficient display for Peterson, who split all kinds of double-teams, finished through contact and proved a solid rebounder, too; in all, he racked up 28 points on 10-for-22 shooting with 12 rebounds and eight assists.
The loss to Dynamic Prep the following day wrapped up a busy week for the future Jayhawk that had started back in Brooklyn, New York, for McDonald’s All-American Game festivities. He stole the show in that game, too, with 18 points and co-MVP honors as he took on some of his fellow top prospects.
