Former Tulsa tackle Tanner is latest lineman to commit to KU
The Kansas football team has made its second offseason transfer acquisition along the offensive line, as former Tulsa lineman Jack Tanner committed to KU on Monday night.
Tanner, a native of Highland Village, Texas, saw extensive action for the Golden Hurricane of the American Athletic Conference as a freshman. He played 437 snaps on offense, according to Pro Football Focus, and started four of the nine games in which he participated, seeing action at both left tackle and right guard.
His addition to the Jayhawks’ roster follows that of former Northwest Missouri State offensive lineman DeAndre Harper, who made his own decision on Friday night.
Tanner also had offers from BYU, Houston, Kansas State, Northwestern and more in the portal after entering on Dec. 2. JayhawkSlant reported that Tanner’s mother and uncle went to KU and his cousin currently attends the school.
“Family is everything, and it ended up becoming a large factor,” he told JayhawkSlant. “Not just my mom but the relationships and culture that the players have.”
The 6-foot-6, 295-pound lineman, who has three years left to play, provides a significant young piece on the offensive line for KU, particularly after Logan Brown declared for the draft on Dec. 3, leaving the Jayhawks with Kobe Baynes and Bryce Foster as their lone consistent returning starters on the offensive line.
If the Jayhawks choose to use Tanner primarily at tackle, where he played the vast majority of his action as a freshman, he could compete with players like Calvin Clements, Nolan Gorczyca and James Livingston for playing time there.
Harrison Utley reportedly entered the portal recently, but KU has many other young pieces on the line as well, including the newly arrived Harper, David Abajian, Amir Herring, Carter Lavrusky and incoming freshman Anderson Kopp.
