KU backup quarterback Vasko to transfer to Coastal Carolina

Kansas freshman quarterback Ethan Vasko (15) tosses the ball during Kansas Football Training Camp on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022.

One of Lance Leipold’s first quarterback recruits has officially found a new home after leaving the Jayhawks.

Ethan Vasko, a one-time three-star prospect for KU, announced Monday on Twitter that he is transferring to Coastal Carolina in Conway, South Carolina.

Vasko had been in the running to be a quarterback of the future for KU, although he was solidly behind starter Jalon Daniels on the depth chart for the upcoming season. Vasko made his college debut last season as a freshman, throwing for 13 yards in limited action against Texas Tech.

Vasko, though, was being watched for whether he would move up the depth chart to become the primary backup at KU, perhaps freeing up speedy backup quarterback Jason Bean to play other positions for the Jayhawks in the 2023 season.

However, Vasko entered the college football transfer portal earlier this month, just days after KU completed its spring game.

Vasko came to KU with some fanfare when he was the top quarterback prospect in the Jayhawks’ 2022 recruiting class. A 6-foot-3 quarterback from Chesapeake, Virginia, Vasko helped his high school win two consecutive Class 6 state titles, and received offers from schools ranging from Old Dominion to South Florida to Virginia Tech.

At Coastal Carolina, Vasko will land outside of a Power 5 conference — the Chanticleers play in the Sun Belt Conference — but the program has won a combined 20 games in the last two seasons.

Vasko will have four years of eligibility left, and he’s entering a program that is expected to be led by senior quarterback Grayson McCall, who is in his final year of eligibility.

As for how KU stacks up at quarterback beyond the veterans Daniels and Bean, the Jayhawks in February picked up an oral commitment from a highly-ranked dual threat quarterback out of Michigan. Isaiah Marshall is a 3-star quarterback that is ranked as the No. 9 dual-threat quarterback in the country by Rivals.com.

KU still must get Marshall signed as part of the 2024 class. The 6-foot, 195-pound QB attends Southfield A&T High in Southfield, Michigan, just outside of Detroit . He has also received offers from multiple Division I programs, including Michigan, Michigan State, and Mississippi.
