Perhaps Miles Kendrick won’t start for Kansas in the upcoming Sunflower Showdown after all.

KU football coach Les Miles was back to his old tricks on his “Hawk Talk” radio show Wednesday night, speaking in vague terms while discussing the quarterback position.

A few days after painting a bleaker picture about the availability of KU quarterbacks Jalon Daniels and Thomas MacVittie during his Monday video press conference, Miles said following the third practice of the week Kendrick, Daniels and MacVittie all threw on Wednesday.

“We think we’ll have enough really quality quarterback play to do the things that we came to do,” Miles said after revealing all three QBs threw at practice.

Before long Miles was hinting KU could return to some sort of rotation at the position.

“The opportunity to play more than one quarterback,” Miles said, “may present itself.”

However, floating that idea publicly very well could be nothing more than a ploy to keep rival Kansas State in the dark about the QB situation.

Just a few weeks back, entering the Big 12 opener at Baylor, Miles said the plan would be to use multiple quarterbacks. Then Daniels made his first career start and played every snap against the Bears.

A true freshman QB from Lawndale, Calif., Daniels missed the loss at West Virginia after appearing to injure his left foot versus Oklahoma State two weeks earlier.

Miles said Wednesday, though, Daniels is getting “a lot” of reps at practices.

“I think he’s comfortable with his development and I think (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brent) Dearmon is doing a great job with him,” Miles said. “And, you know, we’re not just going to throw a guy on the field.”

A 6-foot-5 senior, MacVittie hasn’t played in a game since getting hurt in the third quarter of the season-opening loss to Coastal Carolina on Sept. 12. MacVittie started that game, but rotated in and out of the lineup with Kendrick.

Miles said MacVittie is “further along than he’s been” and the shoulder injury that has kept him out is “getting better.”

“We enjoy some health returning to our quarterback position,” Miles said.

Through four games, KU has started each of its top three quarterbacks at least once. Kendrick started at West Virginia. Daniels started at Baylor and against Oklahoma State. And MacVittie was the first QB on the field this season, versus Coastal Carolina.

Kendrick leads the team in completions (40), attempts (66), completion percentage (60.6%), passing yards (341), passing touchdowns (three) and interceptions (four).

Daniels has completed 23 of 40 passes (57.5%), for 174 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.

MacVittie only has attempted nine passes, completing five for 20 yards. One of those throws was intercepted when a pass deflected off the hands of his receiving target.
