You’ve seen him eat grass. You’ve seen him steal the national championship trophy in a Dr. Pepper commercial. And soon you’ll have a chance to watch Les Miles rappel down the side of a building.

The Kansas football program’s new high profile coach will be 80 feet up, on the rooftop of 888 Lofts downtown, for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence’s second installment of what’s known as an “Over The Edge” fundraiser.

Miles is set serve as the event’s headliner on June 1.

“I am really excited to be a part of this,” Miles stated in a release. “The Lawrence community is very important to my family and myself, and Boys & Girls Club is very important to this community. Youth development that focuses on academic success and good character has been a passion of mine throughout my career. I’m happy to contribute to an organization with fundamentals so aligned with mine.”

This won’t be Miles’ first time rappelling for charity, either. In 2013, when Miles still coached at LSU, he worked his way down the side of a 24-story building in Baton Rouge, La., in support of an adoption awareness campaign.

In the months ahead, the goal behind the Boys & Girls Club’s “Over The Edge” fundraiser is to find people who want to participate by raising $1,000 among their friends and family in order to secure a rappelling spot of their own at the main event.

This past August, KU basketball coach Bill Self was scheduled to pull off the same feat as Miles for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, but had to watch from the street instead, because at the time he was still recovering from a surgery. KU assistant coach Kurtis Townsend, video coordinator Jeremy Case and former KU player Jeff Hawkins rappelled down the 888 Lofts building instead.

Locally, First Management is serving as the event’s building sponsor, while Grandstand Glassware + Apparel is sponsoring the event itself, just as the two businesses did in 2018.

Over The Edge Global helps non-profits raise money through its events.

No experience is required in order to rappel, and there is no age requirement. “Over The Edge” sends professional, certified technicians to install and supervise all rappelling equipment and participants. The only parameter is participants must be between 100-300 pounds.
