3-star DB Jayden Russell not joining Jayhawks this summer

Kansas signee Jayden Russell scans the practice facility during football practice on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 within the new indoor practice facility.

Although he said as recently as a week ago that he planned to join the Kansas football program this summer, that will not be the case for Class of 2019 signee Jayden Russell.

Sources familiar with Russell’s status told the Journal-World the in-state defensive back from St. Thomas Aquinas isn’t currently on campus at KU with other freshman members of the football team.

No one ruled out Russell potentially joining the program in the future, but whether that will be possible remains unknown at this time.

A 6-foot-3, 190-pound defensive back who helped lead St. Thomas Aquinas to a Class 5A state championship as a senior, Russell was rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.

Russell declined to comment on why he is unable to join the team the Jayhawks this summer, as initially planned.

After Les Miles took over the program in late November of 2018, Russell became the first prospect to verbally commit to KU’s new head coach. Russell signed his National Letter of Intent to play at Kansas in December.
