Journal-World Athletes of the Week: Avah Dye and Leo Schoenberger
The winter sports season is a week away from ending as basketball teams competed in substate tournaments and started state tournaments. Here are this week’s selections for Athletes of the Week:
Avah Dye, Eudora
Freshman Avah Dye and the Eudora Cardinals won their substate championship over Wamego 41-34 to reach the 4A state tournament. Dye finished with eight points, which was tied for second on the team, with three rebounds and a steal.

Leo Schoenberger, Baldwin
Leo Schoenberger scored 14 points as the Baldwin Bulldogs beat Coffeyville-Field Kindley in the substate championship to reach the 4A state tournament for the third year in a row. In the first round at state, Schoenberger scored 14 more and had two field goals at the end of the fourth to bring the game to overtime before McPherson eventually won on a buzzer-beating layup.
