Free State soccer advances to 6A quarterfinals with 2-0 win over Wichita East

The Free State High soccer team is headed to the quarterfinal round of the Class 6A state playoffs, following Thursday’s 2-0 win over third-seeded Wichita East in the regional title game in Wichita.

Axel Bengoa and Suyash Kumar scored the goals for Free State, with assists by JJ Zheng and Sam Girard. FSHS goalkeeper Ben Barnett recorded the shutout in net.

The Firebirds, seeded 11th in the west bracket, knocked off No. 6 Topeka High on Tuesday night before taking down the Aces. Thursday’s victory moved FSHS to 8-7-2 on the season.

Free State will play next Tuesday as one of eight teams remaining in Class 6A, with the winner headed to Wichita next weekend for the state semifinals, championship and third-place match.

In other soccer news Thursday, second-seeded Baldwin (13-4-1) defeated No. 10 seed Eudora, 3-1, to move on to the quarterfinals of the Class 1A-4A state playoffs.

The Cardinals finished their season at 6-10-2. BHS will play next Tuesday for a berth in the state semifinals next weekend.

Fourth-seeded Bishop Seabury also saw its season come to an end with a 5-2 loss to perennial powerhouse Bishop Miege at Seabury. The Seahawks finished the season at 10-5-2.
