Free State tennis takes 3rd at league meet; Kinley VanPelt wins singles title

Free State High’s Kinley VanPelt won the school’s first Sunflower League singles title in years this week, winning her four matches by the scores of 8-0, 8-0, 8-1 and 8-1.
Her performance helped lead the Firebirds to a third-place team finish, which teammate Maya Lee also contributed to by taking fifth in the singles bracket.
In doubles action, Free State’s Zoe Cachiguango-Latta and Camille Lee placed sixth while Wendo Kimori and Jada Fowler finished eighth.
VanPelt’s title was the first of its kind under current FSHS coach Aaron Clark.
Lawrence High’s girls tennis team finished 10th at the 14-team Sunflower League meet, with the doubles team of Marsh and Jay taking 14th place and singles player Fiona Bini finishing in 16th place.
LHS’s Emily Brandt also took 17th in singles play and the doubles team of Jones and Middleton reached the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
Next up, the Lions and Firebirds will compete at next week’s Class 6A regional, where spots in the bracket at state the following week will be on the line.
