Free State doubles team takes 5th at 6A state tennis meet

Free State High’s top doubles team of sophomore Maya Lee and senior Dayna Steadman caught fire on Saturday and rolled their way to a fifth-place finish at the Class 6A state meet in Wichita.

After winning three of four matches on Friday to advance to Day 2, Lee and Steadman won three more matches on Saturday, without a loss, to claim fifth.

The first win, a 9-7 marathon over Washburn Rural’s Katherine Fritz and Meredith Kucera, put the Firebirds on the doorstep of the consolation title match.

Lee and Steadman came back from a 4-1 deficit to top Fritz and Kucera.

From there, they promptly knocked off a team from Olathe Northwest, 9-1, to reach the fifth-place match and then made quick work of Blue Valley Northwest’s Saraphina Wambi and Lydia Peng, 9-2.

Lee and Steadman finished 6-1 at this year’s state meet and closed the season with an overall record of 27-9.

Their top-five finish earned them all-state honors, making them the first Free State doubles team to earn that honor in several years.

In singles action, Free State senior Emma Evans battled her way to an 11th-place finish in Wichita on Saturday.

After winning two matches on Friday to advance to Saturday, Evans dropped matches to Blue Valley North’s Shelby Smith and Washburn Rural’s Sheriden Wichman.

That dropped Evans into the 11th-place match, where she won by default after being paired up with Blue Valley West freshman Medha Goli.

Evans finished her senior season with a 15-12 record.
