Journal-World Athletes of the Week: Helena Mattes and Toby Wagner

The high school sports year is nearly completed as the girls swim and dive and boys golf seasons ended, while girls soccer, baseball, softball and track and field wrap up this weekend. In state and regional tournaments, local athletes finished their seasons strong and performed in the playoffs. Here are this week’s selections for Journal-World Athletes of the Week:

Helena Mattes, Free State

Free State’s Helena Mattes swims the 100-yard breaststroke at the 6A state swim and dive meet on Saturday, May 23, 2026, in Lenexa.

Mattes earned second-team all-state at the 6A state girls swim and dive meet for the second-straight year by scoring 29 points. Along with being a member of Free State’s 200-yard medley relay team and 400-yard freestyle relay team, Mattes, a junior, placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Wagner finished the 3A state boys golf tournament in Topeka tied for seventh after shooting 154 across the two-day tournaments. Wagner shot a 75 on the first day and a 79 on the second, which put him in the four-way tie for seventh.
