Former Kansas forward and 13-year NBA veteran Marcus Morris was arrested on felony fraud charges at an airport in Florida on Sunday, according to Broward County Sheriff’s Office records.
The description of the charge against Morris says he was arrested for writing a check with insufficient funds. Morris’ agent Yony Noy disputed that characterization in a post on social media on Sunday night.
“This is due to an outstanding marker with a casino,” Noy wrote. “Apparently if you have over $1,200 they can issue a warrant for your arrest. Absolute insanity!”
Morris’ twin brother Markieff Morris wrote in his own post, “The wording is crazy.”
“Damn for that amount of money they’ll embarrass you in the airport with your family,” Markieff Morris wrote in part. “They got y’all really thinking bro did some fraud (expletive). They could have came to the crib for all that. When y’all hear the real story on this (expletive) man.”
Marcus Morris was still in Broward County jail as of Monday afternoon and was being held without bond with an out-of-state hold, according to arrest records. Cleveland 19 News reported that the arrest originates from a warrant out of Las Vegas.
Morris played at KU from 2008 and 2011 and was the Big 12 player of the year in his third and final collegiate season. The Houston Rockets made him the 14th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, and he played for eight NBA franchises over the course of the following 13 seasons. In recent months he has served as a commentator for ESPN.
