Baldwin, Seabury lose final state playoff games Saturday

Bishop Seabury made it as far as it has ever gotten in boys basketball, but couldn’t secure one last win.

The Seahawks fell 76-63 to top-seeded Montezuma-South Gray on Saturday afternoon in the 1A DI state title game in Colby.

Joseph Dyck and Gavin Wahl each scored 26 points for the Rebels, who pulled away from the Seahawks in the fourth quarter after possessing just a one-point lead at halftime. Seabury never led by more than two points in the game.

Dyck added 14 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals as South Gray forced 14 turnovers by Seabury — which it converted into 23 points — while committing just three of its own.

The Rebels also improved their shooting percentage from 35% in the first half to 56% in the second.

Jace Smith, Chase Honarvar, Aidan Page and Jace Hoffman all scored in double figures for the Seahawks, who conclude their season at 21-5.

No bronze for Baldwin

A pivotal run prior to halftime set the tone for a strong second half for Atchison, as Baldwin lost to the Phoenix 61-50 in Saturday’s 4A third-place game in Salina.

Cooper Carr was responsible for 12 of Baldwin’s 21 points during a first half in which neither team could accomplish much from the field, and particularly from long range, where the Phoenix and Bulldogs were a combined 1-for-18.

Carr finished with 32 points on the night to lead all scorers by a wide margin, but the Phoenix got the win thanks to 16 points by Trey Carter, 12 from Eric Smith III and 11 from Xiomar Hernandez.

Neither team established much control in the first half until Atchison was able to close the second quarter with its critical 9-1 stretch, including a 3-pointer by Hernandez and four points from Smith in the final minute. Smith led his team with 11 at the break.

The Phoenix proceeded to hold the Bulldogs to five points in the third quarter and the Bulldogs only got as close as 10 points down in the fourth.

Baldwin finishes the year at 20-5.
