Preps Notebook: Reed ready for track regional after shattering school record; Free State, LHS close golf season at Eagle Bend
Way back in the fall, Lawrence High senior Tyrell Reed was already circling the school record in the 100-meter dash, held by Chris Fulton (2003). And last month, Reed finally achieved that feat at the Seaman Relays, blazing to a first-place finish (00:10:47) and becoming the new record-holder.
Reed, who posted 1,279 total rushing yards and earned All-State honors with the football team in the fall, was searching for a new challenge.
“Before track season, I wanted to go study who’s the fastest at the school,” Reed said. “I told my mom before, ‘I’m gonna beat that.'”
Since junior high, Reed has leaned on track as a catalyst for football. Before transferring to LHS, Reed set the 100-meter dash record at Highland Park. Reed is committed to continue playing football at Hutchinson Community College this fall.
As he prepares for the next level, Reed said channeling his speed is everything.
“I remember talking with K-State,” he said. “They don’t want to do bench press, because it’s all about your speed work. Your (40-meter) times will get you somewhere; the 225-pound reps won’t get you nowhere.”
Reed has considered running track at Hutchinson, but said he hadn’t yet made that decision. Until then, the high-flying Chesty Lion will be gearing up for the Class 6A regional meet on May 18th in Wichita.
Free State, LHS close regular season at Lawrence Invite
The Free State and Lawrence High golf teams competed in the Lawrence Invitational at Eagle Bend Golf Course on Wednesday. Among six schools, Free State finished fourth (305) and LHS finished sixth (330).
Free State junior Jack Randall and sophomore Aiden Graf-Hannah tied for seventh, each carding 75. Down the list, Free State freshman Cash Nelson shot a 77, tying for 13th with Olathe South’s Brooks Guinn.
Leading the way for LHS was sophomore Nate Schworm, finishing with a 78 and tying for 17th with Free State freshman Henry Thompson. LHS junior Gunnar Wayenberg and freshman Andrew Kirkwood tied for 28th, each shooting 83.
LHS seniors Dallas Ostronic and Macade Lewis tied for 37th, and fellow LHS senior Jack Elsten finished 39th.
Regionals are slated for May 16 at Heritage Park in Olathe.
Six LHS girls sign letters of intent
Six Lawrence High seniors signed to compete at the next level in their sports on Monday during a ceremony at the school.
Amaya Marshall is committed to playing basketball at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park. A four-year starter at LHS, she averaged 10 points per game and picked up second-team all-Sunflower League honors this year.
Lucy Hardy is committed to playing basketball at Highland Community College, just an hour north of Lawrence. She averaged just under 10 points per game and received third-team all-Sunflower League honors this year, and LHS head coach Jeff Dickson said she was the Lady Lions’ best defender.
Daphne Bracker-Sturm is committed to playing basketball at Bryn Mawr, just 30 minutes outside of Philadelphia. She played a key role for LHS at center and was an honorable mention in the Journal-World’s All-Area Teams this year.
Hailey Ramirez is committed to playing softball at Baker University. Ramirez is one of just three seniors on this year’s softball team. LHS head softball coach Mike Byrn credited Ramirez with helping the program jump out to a 5-0 start.
Ashlynn Flory is committed to throwing javelin for Washburn University’s track and field team. While at LHS, Flory has been a two-year letter winner competing in track and field and softball.
Cree Stewart is committed to playing soccer at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Stewart holds LHS’ single-season saves record and was a first-team goalkeeper in the Journal-World’s All-Area Teams.
