Area substate roundup: Eudora, Baldwin headed to state

Four area schools – Eudora (4A), Baldwin (4A), Perry Lecompton (3A) and Bishop Seabury (1A) – saw their boys’ basketball teams advance past substate quarterfinal and semifinal rounds this past week. All four girls squads fell short in the initial substate rounds.

The Eudora and Baldwin boys’ teams are state-bound, each taking home substate championship honors Friday night.

CLASS 4A

Eudora

Defeating No. 15-seeded Independence 57-39 in Tuesday’s semifinal, the No. 2 Eudora boys’ basketball team topped No. 7 Wamego in the substate championship. The Cardinals (18-4) will travel to Salina for the state tournament tipping off March. 8.

On Wednesday, the No. 14-seeded Eudora girls basketball team ended its season at 6-15, falling to No. 3 Independence 37-29 in the Class 4A substate semifinal.

Baldwin

Passing No. 14-seeded Iola 69-41 in Tuesday’s semifinal, the No. 3-seeded Baldwin boys basketball team defeated No. 6 Holton 65-47 in the substate championship on Friday. The Bulldogs (18-4) will travel to Salina for the state tournament.

On Wednesday, No. 11-seeded Altamont-Labette ended the No. 6 Baldwin girls basketball team’s season at 13-8, upsetting the Bulldogs 46-38 at home.

CLASS 3A

Perry-Lecompton

Running through No. 7-seeded Jefferson West 67-36 in Tuesday’s quarterfinal, the No. 2 Perry-Lecompton boys basketball team passed No. 6 Silver Lake 38-28 in the substate semifinal on Friday. The Kaws (18-4) will meet either No. 1 Bishop Ward or No. 4 Olathe Heritage in the substate championship on Saturday.

On Monday, The No. 6-seeded Perry-Lecompton girls basketball team ended its season at 7-14, falling at Rossville 66-14 in the substate quarterfinal.

CLASS 1A

Bishop Seabury

Charging past No. 5-seeded Onaga 76-40 in last week’s substate quarterfinal, the No. 4 Bishop Seabury boys basketball team fell short to No. 1 Burlingame 67-56 in the substate semifinal on Friday night. The Seahawks’ campaign ends at 8-10.

Last week, No. 2-seeded Highland-Doniphan West outran the No. 7 Bishop Seabury girls, defeating the Seahawks (0-11) 74-23 in the substate quarterfinal.
