KU baseball’s Cole Elvis signs with Minnesota Twins
Kansas senior Cole Elvis is jubilant after a two-RBI base hit against Kansas State. Kansas fell 5-4 on Friday, April 14, 2023.
The Kansas baseball team didn’t earn any selections in the draft, but has now had two players sign with MLB teams since it concluded.
KU announced Tuesday that catcher and first baseman Cole Elvis, who started every game for the Jayhawks in 2023 after four seasons at Cal, has signed a contract with the Minnesota Twins.
He follows teammate Collin Baumgartner, a fellow transfer who made an impact in Dan Fitzgerald’s first year as head coach and officially joined the Colorado Rockies organization last Wednesday.
“I’m forever grateful for my family, coaches, teammates, and the University of Kansas for helping me achieve this lifelong dream,” Elvis said in KU’s news release.
The Vacaville, California, native batted .269 in 234 at-bats for the Jayhawks this season and slugged a season-high .517 thanks to 16 doubles and 14 home runs. That home-run number was the highest for a KU player since Tony Thompson in 2009, made all the more impressive because in Elvis’ four prior seasons of college baseball, he had hit 17 home runs combined. Elvis also managed a 17-game hitting streak at one point during the 2023 season.
For his efforts, Elvis earned All-Big 12 Conference second-team honors. Fitzgerald said in the press release that Elvis left an indelible impact on the KU program in just one year, and credited the Twins’ scouts for seeking him out.
“Cole will forever be one of the all-time great Jayhawks,” Fitzgerald said. “His leadership from day one was palpable, he immediately had universal respect from everyone in our program, and he set a new standard for what it means to be an exceptional teammate.”
Elvis’ younger brother, the aptly named Cal, is committed to join Kansas after his high school graduation in 2024.
