KU unveils redesigned football jerseys

A big hype-building week for Kansas football, which featured four preseason all-conference first-team selections and a ninth-place projected finish, culminated late Friday night with the unveiling of two new uniforms.

Kansas Athletics posted a video featuring two new designs on social media after a tease early in the day, revealing fresh all-blue and all-white uniforms.

The blue jersey features a pair of white stripes with thick red outlines on each shoulder. An all-caps bold white “Kansas” is emblazoned across the front, accompanied by Adidas and Big 12 Conference patches, atop a white number with another red outline. The jersey is accompanied by blue pants and a blue helmet with blue facemask.

That option, modeled in the video by running back Devin Neal and safety Kenny Logan Jr., will likely serve as the Jayhawks’ primary home uniform for the 2023 season.

The white option, as worn by Neal (once again) and quarterback Jalon Daniels, follows much the same pattern. The jersey includes pairs of blue stripes with red borders on each shoulder, a central blue “Kansas,” recolored patches and a blue number with the same red border, to go along with white pants.

The primary difference is the helmet, which is white with a thick blue stripe in the middle that features red accents on either side. Both the blue and white helmets feature KU’s traditional smiling Jayhawk logo, as well as a small raised all-caps “Kansas” on the front of the helmet (in both cases blue text on a white background).

Notably, the uniforms do not use the Trajan font that has long defined KU athletic stylings since its widespread implementation in 2007. KU also did not reveal any plans for an alternate jersey.

KU has redesigned its football uniforms several times this millennium, including when it switched away from navy blue in 2005 (contemporaneous with its transition to Adidas) and temporarily removed names from the backs of jerseys in 2010. Over the years, the team has periodically suited up in limited alternate jerseys, including a “limestone” effort in 2016 inspired by the phrase “Rock Chalk,” a Civil War-themed kit in 2017, a World War II option the following year and the so-called “Hail to Old KU” powder-blue alternate look the last couple years, among many others.

The new slate of designs will undoubtedly be a topic of discussion at next week’s Big 12 Football Media Days.
