After a hot June, Sporting Kansas City II is on track for an even hotter July.

A record-setting match saw Sporting (6-4-5) roll past Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 7-1, the most goals scored by SKC II in the developmental club’s history, on Sunday at Rock Chalk Park.

Opening July with a win, SKC II extends its unbeaten streak to five matches and now rests at fifth in the MLS Next Pro’s Western Conference.

SKC II found the net four times during the first half.

Rookie forward Stephen Afrifa scored his first professional goal, with an assist by Felipe Hernandez, to send KC up 2-0 28 minutes into the match.

Alenis Vargas, who assisted a goal by Hernandez earlier in the night, earned his first goal with the club during the 58th minute, before SKC II blew the doors open.

Sporting struck three additional times in the second half. In all, Afrifa, Andrew Draper, Cam Duke, Danny Flores, Hernandez, Vargas and Pau Vidal scored once each, while SKC II allowed a single tally to Vancouver forward Levonte Johnson at the 93-minute mark. It was the Whitecaps’ only shot on goal.

Limiting Vancouver to just seven total shots on Sunday, Sporting earned the league’s Team of Matchday 15 honors and improved its bid for the postseason, jumping three points above the line. The win improves Sporting to 3-2-3 at home this season.

Next up, SKC II travels to Portland, meeting Timbers 2 on Sunday at Providence Park. The match is slated to begin at 9 p.m. CT.
