Kansas spiced up its signing day with a late-in-the-game high school commitment, as three-star 2024 prospect Greydon Grimes, from China Spring High School in Texas, announced early Wednesday morning that he will join the Jayhawks next season.

Grimes is the son of new KU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes and had been committed to his father’s previous program, Baylor, since June, prior to decommitting late Tuesday night.

Grimes is a bit of a hybrid prospect who could play on the defensive line or at tight end, although with the Jayhawks’ recent addition of Iowa State transfer tight end DeShawn Hanika, a spot on defense seems much more likely for the 6-foot-5, 246-pound athlete. In announcing his signing later Wednesday, KU listed him as a defensive end.

KU is now slated to have 17 scholarship freshmen arrive in 2024 in comparison to 16 players who underwent Senior Day festivities last month. Because the Jayhawks have seen three players depart in the transfer portal (Will Huggins, Gage Keys and Tanaka Scott) and added three more (Devin Dye, Hanika and Dylan Wudke), they are currently on track to be one over their scholarship limit. But the portal window is open until Jan. 2.

Grimes and Wudke will bolster a defensive line that has lost Keys and Devin Phillips at the defensive tackle spot but should be on track to retain most of its defensive end talent, pending, of course, a late transfer decision or an NFL jump for Austin Booker.
