Softball Roundup

The Free State softball team came up just short to Olathe East 6-5 in extra innings on Thursday night at home.

After tying the ballgame at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Firebirds and Hawks went scoreless through three suspenseful frames. Trailing by two runs heading into the bottom of the eleventh, the Free State crossed one baserunner, but never came any closer to O-East.

Junior Elsa Carrillo went four innings for Free State (3-9), allowing four runs on six hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Junior Grace Rothwell, relieving Carrillo in the fifth, finished the game with two runs allowed on six hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.

Carrillo shined at the plate, finishing the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Two more RBIs came from Rothwell (1-for-4) and another from junior Cydnee Price (2-for-6).

Across town, the Lawrence High softball team couldn’t capitalize on a late spark in their 7-2 loss to Gardner Edgerton on Thursday night at home. A two-run homer by sophomore Maddy Crawford cut the Lady Lions to within five runs of the Blazers, but it just wasn’t enough.

Junior Taylor Zeckser, receiving her second consecutive start for LHS (5-10), allowed five runs on six hits and a walk through four innings on the mound. Freshman Sophie Rowley relieved Zeckser in the fifth, giving up two more runs on two hits, a walk and a strikeout.

Alongside Crawford’s late bomb, senior Emme Dye (1-for-3) and junior Charlie Burghart (1-for-3) registered two of LHS’ three total hits.
