Baseball and softball roundup: Free State baseball wins eight in a row; Free State, LHS softball fall on Tuesday

The Free State baseball team grabbed its eighth consecutive win Tuesday at Shawnee Mission West with a 3-0 victory over the Vikings.

A two-run RBI by Ryan Weishaar fueled the Firebirds’ (11-1) three-run fourth inning that ended up being all the power needed to top the Vikings.

Freshman Ben Graves received the starting nod, leading Free State through six innings with just two hits allowed on a walk and five strikeouts. Junior Kyle Graves relived his younger brother in the seventh, walking a batter and striking out two for the win.

Kyle Graves led Free State at the plate batting 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Senior Brady Kern finished the game 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Junior Mason Lester added an RBI of his own.

Free State travels to Olathe West on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Olathe West trounces LHS softball at home

The Lawrence High softball team couldn’t keep up with Olathe West in a 17-7 loss on Tuesday at home. Scoring 11 runs by the end of the third, the Owls didn’t LHS out of their sight.

Freshman Sophie Rowley stepped onto the hill for LHS (4-7) for four innings, allowing 11 runs on seven hits, a home run, four walks and no strikeouts. Junior Taylor Zeckser relieved Rowley in the fifth, allowing six more runs on seven hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

Senior Emme Dye led the Lady Lions at the plate batting 2-for-3, including a triple and an RBI. Junior Charlie Burghart finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and senior Maelee Folks swung 1-for-3 adding two RBIs.

LHS travels to Olathe South on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. The Lawrence High baseball team hosts Shawnee Mission North in a makeup game on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Free State softball falls to Olathe South

The Free State softball team fell at Olathe South 3-0 on Tuesday. The Owls jumped out front early, scoring two runs in the second and never let the Lady Firebirds (4-7) back in it.

Junior Elsa Carrillo got the starting nod, pushing Free State through six innings allowing three runs on four hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. Free State’s lone hit came by senior Alena Velilla.

Free State travels to Mill Valley on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.
