Free State softball has regional postponed due to weather

The Free State softball team’s quest for a third consecutive state title won’t kick off until Friday, because Wednesday’s Class 6A softball regional was postponed by inclement weather.

FSHS (17-1), the No. 2 seed in Class 6A West, is slated to face No. 15 Wichita Heights (3-17) in the regional opener. That game, originally scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, will now begin at 2 p.m. Friday at FSHS.

If the Firebirds win, they will square off against No. 7 Derby (16-5) at approximately 4 p.m. Friday for a spot in the Class 6A state tournament. In its regional opener, Derby was up 10-0 after three innings against Wichita North before a lengthy weather delay. The game was ultimately called, and the Panthers were awarded the victory.

Free State’s lone loss this spring came against Washburn Rural on April 16. The Firebirds went 13-0 in league play on their way to a Sunflower League title, their fourth in program history after winning the league in 2005, 2006 and 2019.
