Baldwin, Eudora girls soccer both advance to regional championship

On Tuesday, Baldwin’s girls soccer team pulled off a thrilling 3-2 overtime win at Bishop Seabury, and Eudora’s team won its first playoff game in more than three years.

Now, both teams are bound for regional finals in Class 4A-1A.

Against No. 9 seed Seabury (6-8), No. 8 seed Baldwin (7-7-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two scores from Emma Pratt. The match was then delayed for nearly an hour by inclement weather.

But Seabury made things interesting down the stretch.

The Seahawks scored both of their goals in roughly the last three minutes of regulation. Their first goal came from Morgan Orozco, and freshman Helena Gutierrez delivered the equalizer in the final seconds to force overtime. In the extra period, Addy Ediger scored the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs.

Baldwin will now travel to Heritage Christian Academy at 4:30 p.m. today for the regional championship.

Meanwhile, No. 5 seed Eudora (10-6-1) is also headed to a regional final after defeating No. 12 seed Atchison 6-0 at home on Tuesday.

Kate Erpelding led EHS in scoring. She made half the team’s goals for a hat trick. Jayla Erpelding finished with two scores and an assist, and Harleigh Moore delivered her first career goal.

Eudora will travel to Louisburg at 5 p.m. today for the regional championship.

In other area soccer news, Free State and Lawrence High were both knocked out of the postseason on Tuesday.

FSHS earned a 2-1 road win over Wichita Southeast in the play-in game on Monday. But the next day, the Firebirds traveled to top-seeded Washburn Rural and lost 5-0. Free State finished the year with a 4-12-1 overall record.

Lawrence, the No. 14 seed in Class 6A West, lost 1-0 at No. 3 Wichita East on Tuesday. The Lions ended the year with a 4-12-1 overall record.
