Lawrence pitcher Ike Cobb pitches against Sioux Falls Lincoln. Lawrence fell 7-3 Friday, March 19, 2021.
Behind a strong showing on the mound and clutch batting, Lawrence High’s baseball team earned a 3-1 over Sioux Falls Bishop O’Gorman Friday night at LHS. The Lions are now 2-1 on the year.
Lawrence starter Ike Cobb put together a brilliant effort on the mound in the win. He allowed one unearned run off three hits over six innings of work, while striking out eight batters and walking none. Charlie Elsten then tossed a scoreless inning of relief in his varsity debut to close out the win.
“Ike Cobb was really special tonight,” LHS head coach Brad Stoll said. “Charlie Elsten came in with a solid first varsity pitching performance in the seventh.”
It all would have been for naught, though, had it not been thanks to a clutch performance at the plate from senior shortstop Carlos Vasquez. The Lions scored all three runs in the home half of the sixth, in which Vasquez delivered a two-run double to left that scored Devin Neal and Reed Wilson.
The third run of the night came when Karson Green crossed home on an error by the opposing pitcher. Vasquez recorded two of Lawrence’s three hits with a pair of doubles, while August Reed was credited with the other base knock.
(He’s) locked in at the plate,” Stoll said of Vasquez.
LHS will face Brandon Valley at 10 a.m. Saturday.
