Lawrence High’s baseball team found more success on offense in the second of the season, earning a 8-4 win over Sioux Falls Washington on Saturday at LHS. The Lions open the year with a 1-1 record after falling to Sioux Falls Lincoln in Friday’s opener.
It was obvious early that Lawrence’s offense was going to have a better day in Game 2. The Lions jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first frame. Carlos Vasquez came through with a two-run triple, scoring both Devin Neal and Jack Stoll. Karson Green followed suit with a RBI base knock.
The Lions lost their lead in the top of the third, when the Warriors scored three runs to grab a 4-3 advantage. LHS then evened the score back up in the home half of the inning, when Vasquez drove in Stoll on a double to center.
Evan Bannister was responsible for Lawrence’s go-ahead run, as he gave Lawrence a 5-4 lead in the fifth with a single to right. It was a sequence set up by Truman Juelsgaard, who stole second base to get in scoring position. LHS stole six bases as a team.
The Lions added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away. Vasquez finished with three RBI off his two extra-base hits. Stoll scored two runs and went 2-for-3 on the day.
“Proud of the amount of quality at-bats we had,” LHS head coach Brad Stoll said. “Ran bases effectively and aggressively. Six stolen bases and smart reads off the bat.”
John Green got the starting nod, giving up four runs on five hits over four innings on the mound. Reed Wilson was effective in relief, recording eight strikeouts over three shutout frames.
Lawrence will host Sioux Falls Bishop O’Gorman at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
