For the second time this week at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Neb., former Lawrence-based swimmer Michael Andrew punched his ticket for Tokyo.

Already in this summer’s Olympics in the 100-meter breaststroke after setting an American record on Sunday before Monday’s finals, Andrew won the 200-meter individual medley on Friday.

His time of 1:55.44 was more than two seconds better than the runner up. The top two swimmers in each race earn a spot on the Olympic team.

Swimming in Friday’s finals with Andrew and six other swimmers was world record holder and 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte, 36, who finished seventh.

“He’s a legend in the water,” Andrew said of Lochte in a post-race interview. “He’s done some incredible things. To share the pool with him is always an honor.”

Andrew, 22, lived in Lawrence from age 11 to 19 before moving to Encinitas, Calif., in 2018 to focus on his push for the Tokyo Olympics.

The games were pushed back from 2020 to this summer because of the pandemic, but the delay merely gave Andrew more time to train.

Next up, Andrew will look to qualify for his third event in Tokyo, the 50 freestyle. The prelims are slated for Saturday night, with the finals set for Sunday.
