Area kids qualify for AAU Junior Olympic Games
Four local athletes will be headed to the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Houston in late July after qualifying for the event last weekend during the AAU Region 16 Championships.
Jonah Frye, who is 13 and competing in the 14-year-old boys age group, was one of the four local standouts after qualifying in two different events. He was the regional champion in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:52.73, while also taking third in the 1,500-meter run with a mark of 4:37.02.
Eloise Frye, 10, qualified for multiple events as well while competing in the 10-year-old girls age group. She was regional champion in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:52.02. She also posted a mark of 3:03.49 to finish fourth in the 800-meter run.
Emery Frye, who is 12 and competing in the 12-year-old girls age group, secured a fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. She ended up posting a time of 5:42.10 in her race.
Isley Frye, the youngest of the group at 6-years-old, recorded a mark of 6:58.05 to take fifth in the 1,500-meter run. She competed and qualified in the division that features all kids ages 8-years-old and younger.
The 55th AAU Junior Olympic Games is slated to begin on July 28 and last through Aug. 7. Track and field competition will take place from July 30 through Aug. 7.
