LHS has 2 wrestlers claim runner-up at state meet; FSHS posts 5 podium finishes

A pair of Lawrence High wrestlers made it to the finals, but neither of them were able to come away with a state title at the Class 6A state wrestling meet on Saturday inside Hartman Arena.

Lawrence senior Trey Medina’s undefeated season came to an end in the championship match of the 145-pound weight class, when he lost by major decision against Nathan Bowen of Haysville-Campus. Medina had won his previous 20 matches, including back-to-back victories to get to the finals, before getting runner-up in his state bracket.

Medina, who went 20-1 during his senior season, won a regional title and a substate crown this postseason. He was even named regional wrestler of the year and co-wrestler of the year at substate.

Junior Kevin Honas also finished as a runner-up in the 120-pound weight class, ending his season with a 22-4 overall record. Honas scored two quick points in the championship bout, but ultimately dropped a 9-2 decision to Washburn Rural’s Bishop Murray (No. 1 in 6A) in the end.

The Lions had another two wrestlers find the podium as well. Lawrence sophomore Jack Elsten finished in fourth in the 113-pound weight class, while freshman Andrew Honas closed out his rookie campaign with a sixth-place finish in the 106-pound weight class.

Nobody made it to the finals for Free State, but five of its six wrestlers found a way to place during Saturday’s state wrestling meet.

Sophomore Nolan Bradley finished in third place in the 106-pound weight class, capped by a major decision over Junction City’s Ezekiel Witt in the third-place match. Sophomore Eric Streeter also won his third-place match, besting Elsten in the 113-pound weight class.

Junior Darius Shields, who won a state title a year ago in Class 3A-1A, finished fifth in the 120-pound weight class during his first season with Free State. Senior Caleb Streeter also finished fifth in the 138-pound weight class, which earned him a podium finish for the first time in his four trips to the state tourney.

Senior Alex Allison closed out his high school career with a sixth-place finish in the 195-pound weight class for the Firebirds.

Free State and Lawrence finished in a tie for ninth in the team standings, as they both scored 53 total points. Washburn Rural (No. 1 in Class 6A) won the state title with a total score of 159.5 points.
